SUMMARY:Merging Science and Safety: Addressing Gun Violence as a Public Health Issue
DESCRIPTION:Rising incidences of gun violence across the country have affected not only the physical and mental health of individuals and families\, but also the economic and social stability as well. As the agency has grown\, the technology has expanded to become a powerful\, versatile tool that reduces the barriers to caring for individuals with some of the most complex needs in our communities.  And they have never lost their heart. \nTaraji P. Henson\, the Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation \nTaraji P. Henson and the Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation have been tireless advocates for furthering the national focus on the importance of mental health support for the African-American community. Launched in 2018 in honor of her late father\, Taraji P. Henson\, and the Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation provides scholarships to African-American students majoring in mental health\, offers mental health services to youth in urban schools\, and works to lower recidivism rates of African-American men and women.  What is so wonderful about their advocacy\, is that it doesn’t only include innovative outreach programming; it also includes strengthening the diversity and inclusion of the mental health workforce.    \nTaraji P. Henson is an Academy Award-nomination and Golden Globe-winning actor\, filmmaker\, and activist. \nDr. Rinad Beidas\, PhD.\, Penn Implementation Science Center  \nDr. Beidas has leveraged the strength of data and research to not only propel development and innovation within the sector\, but she has also demonstrated a true commitment to ensuring that vulnerable communities receive high-quality care. With over 200 peer-reviewed publications and a commitment to training the next generation through mentoring\, Dr. Biedas serves as an international leader in implementation sciences. She and her team truly exemplify how the intersection of data and compassion can make a difference. \nSteven R. Carson\, MHA\, BSN\, RN\, Temple Center for Population Health  \nSteven Carson and the Temple Center for Population Health are innovative in how they approach care models and partnerships to support population health. With over 30 years of leadership experience in both academic and community-based delivery systems\, Mr. Carson leads collaborative efforts to serve the community. One great example was the program they implemented with RHD for the Housing Smart program (connected homeless individuals to resources and supports so they don’t have to utilize the ED). Additionally\, they are doing important work in support of value-based care models\, and are open to working with not only local stakeholders but regional and national partners to further strong population health models. \nValerie L. Mielke\, MSW\, New Jersey Department of Human Services \nCurrently serving as the Assistant Commissioner for the New Jersey Division of Mental Health and Addiction Service in the Department of Human Services\, Valerie Mielke is well-recognized throughout the provider community in our state as someone who is a true partner in care for our communities. She is authentic\, is always willing to listen\, provides productive input\, and is open to innovations that will help improve the health and wellness of the individuals and families we serve.

Kennedy \nDuring his time in Congress\, Patrick J. Kennedy was the lead author of the landmark Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (Federal Parity Law)\, which requires insurers to cover treatment for mental health and substance use disorders no more restrictively than treatment for illnesses of the body\, such as diabetes and cancer. In 2013\, he founded The Kennedy Forum\, a nonprofit that unites advocates\, business leaders\, and government agencies to advance evidence-based practices\, policies\, and programming in mental health and addiction. In 2015\, Kennedy co-authored the New York Times Bestseller\, “A Common Struggle: A Personal Journey Through the Past and Future of Mental Illness and Addiction\,” which details a bold plan for the future of mental health care in America. In 2017\, he was appointed to the President’s Commission on Combating Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis. \nAmy Kennedy \nAmy is the Education Director of The Kennedy Forum where she pursues partnerships and collaborations that emphasize evidence-based research and programming to facilitate policy change in the areas of education and mental health. Last year\, Amy ran for Congress in New Jersey’s 2nd congressional district.z With over 15 years of experience working in public schools\, Amy has seen first-hand how a child’s mental health and mental health literacy impacts their ability to learn and grow—not only in the classroom\, but in life. Amy serves on the boards of Mental Health America\, a leading national advocacy organization\, and Parity.org\, which promotes gender parity at the highest levels of business. She is an advisory board member of Interaxon\, a mental health technology company; the JED Foundation which focuses on mental wellness and emotional preparedness for teens; and Brain Futures. Amy and her husband\, former Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy\, live in New Jersey with their five children. \nChuck Ingoglia\, MSW \nChuck Ingoglia is the president and CEO of the National Council for Mental Wellbeing where he leads the national charge to ensure people have access to quality\, affordable mental health and addiction services. To accomplish this\, he harnesses the voices and support of the more than 3\,000 National Council members who serve over 10 million individuals nationwide. Chuck previously lead the organization’s policy and practice improvement work\, directing the organization’s federal and state policy efforts and overseeing trainings and programs offered to more than 500\,000 behavioral health professionals across the U.S. He has effected change at both the national and state level by playing a major role in policy advocacy and analyses issues relevant to behavioral health. Chuck holds a Master of Social Work and a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work\, both from The Catholic University of America. \nSuzanne Kunis \nSuzanne Kunis is Vice President of Behavioral Health Solutions for Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey. She brings over 30 years of experience in the health care industry with a significant focus on behavioral health. Suzanne is a registered nurse and moved from care delivery to health care management early in her career. \nTom Coderre \nTom Coderre is the Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Mental Health and Substance Use. With decades of public\, private\, and non-profit service\, Tom is the first person in recovery to lead the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). His career has been significantly influenced by his personal journey and a philosophy that acknowledges the essential role peer recovery support services play in helping people with mental and substance use disorders rebuild their lives. Coderre is a career civil servant who is on detail from his position as SAMHSA’s Regional Administrator for New England.
